Veterans Running for Congress Get Political Push From Governor, Also a Veteran

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill hit the campaign trail on Wednesday to support veterans in other states running for Congress in this year’s midterm elections.

Sherrill, a Democrat and former Naval helicopter pilot who became governor of the Garden State in November 2025, traveled to Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Aug. 19 to campaign alongside three veterans running for office.

Those veterans Sherrill campaigned for are Rep. Seth Moulton, who is running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts; Rep. Maggie Googlander, running for New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District; and Maura Sullivan, running in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District.

According to veterans advocacy group With Honor, 752 veterans have registered to run for the House and Senate this year—the highest number they have recorded since they started tracking this data in 2018. The group also found that while the majority of veteran candidates are affiliated with the Republican Party, some 39% of the candidates are registered Democrats — another record proportion.

If Democrats see success in the midterm elections this November, they could upset the balance of power in Congress as Republicans currently hold majorities in the House and Senate.

Earlier this month, CBS News reported that Sherrill was intending to use her federal political action committee, Sherrill’s Mission to Deliver PAC, to endorse Democratic candidates in competitive congressional races.

The PAC endorsed 13 Democrats with military or national security backgrounds.

“Each one of these candidates has taken multiple oaths to the U.S. Constitution. They know what it means to serve others and accomplish the mission, whatever it takes,” Sherrill told CBS News at the time. “When we send veterans to Washington, we are sending in dedicated public servants who are trained to run towards the fight and are unafraid to take on the status quo.”

The veterans Sherrill campaigned for are Seth Moulton, who is running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts; U.S. Rep. Maggie Googlander, running for New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District; and Maura Sullivan, running in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District.

Moulton formerly served in the Marine Corps and was in the first company of Marines to enter Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003. He has been the U.S. representative for Massachusett’s 6th Congressional District since 2015. He is running against longtime Democratic Sen. Ed Markey, who is 33 years his senior. The party primary is Sept. 1.

Goodlander served as an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve for over a decade. The incumbent congressional representative, who also worked as a foreign policy advisor to Senator John McCain, serves on the House Committee on Veteran’s Affairs. The primary is Sept. 8.

Sullivan is a Marine Iraq War veteran. After leaving the Marines, President Barack Obama appointed her to serve as Assistant Secretary at the VA. Later, she held senior roles at the Pentagon in national security and supporting military families. She has also held roles in the private sector.

Sullivan squares off against eight other Democrats in the Sept. 8 primary.
