When it comes to hot hatches, muscle cars, and performance sedans, no set of rims looks as cool as those red brake calipers, right? Well, brands don’t just pick the colors to give your wheels some visual flair. When it comes to Nissan, the colors are selected to signify braking performance level.
Don’t get us wrong, they do look cool, but when you learn what the colors mean, you’ve got one more way to impress your gearhead friends.
Nissan’s Five-Color Code
Nissan fits its cars with one of five different colors; silver, yellow, red, bright red, and gold. Here’s what they mean.
Silver Is Nissan’s Most Common Brake Caliper Color
Take a look at the nearest parking lot, see if you can spot a Nissan Kicks or a Nissan Altima. Chances are, their brake calipers are going to be a simple, muted silver color. As Nissan puts it, all of its braking systems are “designed to provide confident, smooth stopping power in a variety of conditions.” But, silver brakes are designed to do it in everyday driving scenarios.
Nissan has scored three Top Safety Pick+ awards from the IIHS for 2026, an award that demands top-notch stopping power in order to avoid collisions, so it’s not that silver brakes are “lesser,” they’re just not necessarily designed for the track.
Red Means Performance
Eye-catching red brake calipers signal that you’re driving a performance model. The 2027 Nissan Z, for instance, comes with a set of silver calipers on the Sport model, and red on the Z Performance model.
Red brake sets feature Akebono four-piston calipers in the front and two-pistons in the back, where a silver Nissan Z set packs two-pistons in the front, and one-pistons in the back. The reds are all-aluminum while the silvers are cast iron, and the brake rotors are bigger in the Z Performance model, at 14 and 13.8 inches, front and back, to 12.6 and 12.1 inches in the Sport.
These specs aren’t universal by color across all models. The 2026 Nissan Armada NISMO, for instance, features 13.78-inch rotors, front and back. But, the colors let you know whether someone’s driving the base model or a performance trim.
Bright Red Is The Next Tier Up
We think these suckers are gorgeous. They look like fresh red chili peppers. In the 2027 Nissan Z NISMO, this color signals a set of two-piece iron-aluminum rotors derived from the Nissan GT-R. These calipers are painted red with a clear-coat designed to withstand high temperatures, and they measure 15 inches in the front, and 13.8 inches in the back.
This color is actually brand-new to the brand, as the Z team “wanted to take this extra step to make the NISMO model stand out just a bit more.”
Gold Calipers Signal Brembo Brakes
Nissan has been dripping their brake calipers out in gold since 1999, starting with the JDM Nissan R34 GT-R. Earlier Brembo-equipped Nissans used black calipers, before Nissan started giving these systems their own signature look.
Specs vary by model, but, in the 2007 Nissan R35 GT-R, for instance, gold signaled six-piston sets up front, and four-piston sets in the back.
Yellow Signifies The Most Capable Brakes You Can Buy On A Nissan
You don’t see a lot of yellow brakes on Nissans out on the street. These are the rarest of the bunch, fitted exclusively to limited-run cars like the 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO, a just-barely street-legal performance model with only 26 units built in total.
These are carbon ceramic Brembo systems with the cheddar-yellow paint intended to withstand temperatures over 1,832 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt bronze. This will keep your shoes looking fresh no matter how many laps you run on the track.
