Every active and reserve Marine now owes an annual Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) protective mask fit and seal test. The Marine Corps made the requirement service-wide in MARADMIN 384/26, signed Aug. 21 by Lieutenant General Jay M. Bargeron, the deputy commandant for Plans, Policies, and Operations.
The change turns mask seal validation into a named, tracked annual task for the Total Force. The status will follow a Marine in the Marine Corps Training Information Management System (MCTIMS).
The practical test is a simple one: get a seal on an M50 or M53A1, clean-shaven at the respirator seal surface for that event, and leave with a completed entry.
What Changed for the Individual Marine
Previously, mask fit and seal checks were largely left to individual units and their training schedules. Some commands ran Individual Protective Equipment Confidence Exercises on a schedule. Others checked seals before a field period and moved on. The new rule makes annual fit and seal testing mandatory for all Marines, active and reserve.
Approved masks are the M50 and the M53A1 Joint Service General Purpose Mask. At a minimum, Marines complete a negative pressure seal check so the facepiece holds an airtight seal on inhalation. Commands with the right mask allowance can instead run an Individual Protective Equipment Confidence Exercise.
That sits next to other standards Marines already track by name, from swim qual to heat and cold injury prevention. Seal readiness is now the same kind of pass-or-fail standard with a date attached.
Clean-Shaven for the Test, Even With a Waiver
Tight-fitting respiratory gear needs an unobstructed seal between the facepiece and skin. According to the Marine Corps message, personnel shall be clean-shaven at the respirator seal surface when they take the annual CBRN test or training.
That rule applies for the test itself even if a Marine holds a shaving waiver. The waiver does not buy a free pass on seal day. The checklist is narrow: shave the seal surface before the event, don the mask correctly, and prove the seal.
Marines looking for the wider grooming picture can start with recent Marine Corps grooming coverage, then check the unit standing operating procedure for which method their command will use.
How MCTIMS Can Flag You
Training and Education Command set a service-directed requirement labeled Annual Mask Fit Training. Commands record whether a Marine completed the event, has not yet completed it, or attempted it and did not get an effective seal.
Commanders were directed to validate every Marine’s status by Aug. 31, 2026. O-6-level commanders with untrained active-component Marines owed compliance plans by Sept. 30. Reserve plans are due by Dec. 31. A Marine who has not completed the annual event should expect a make-up date.
What Chamber Day Looks Like Now
Expect a short prep brief, a serviceability check, and a buddy inspection before anyone steps toward a chamber or a seal-check line. The minimum path is the negative pressure check. The fuller path is the confidence exercise many Marines already know from recruit training and annual CBRN days.
Instructors will watch for leaks when you move your head, breathe harder, or break and reseal the facepiece. Units that already ran confidence chambers will recognize the drill. What is new is the annual requirement and the MCTIMS entry that follows it.
Checklist Before You Hit the Line
Confirm your MCTIMS Annual Mask Fit Training status. If it shows you have not completed the event or failed it, get on the next scheduled date.
Shave the respirator seal surface the morning of the test, waiver or not. Bring glasses inserts if you rate them. Leave contact lenses out if your unit’s CBRN safety brief bans them for the event.
Know which standard your command is using: negative pressure seal check or Individual Protective Equipment Confidence Exercise, on an M50 or M53A1. Ask who updates MCTIMS after you pass.
If you fail, get a retest date and fix the fit or the mask condition before your unit’s compliance plan clock runs out. The annual requirement is already in force. Walk out of the next event with a completed entry.
