We got a long season and something about having a tag deer and elk tags in your pocket in late November a beautiful thing.

Speaker 7: Saw a lot of dudes in openings, open areas. Every open area that I glassed, every ridge had orange on it. So I was like, you know what, I bet the boys aren’t in the timber sneaking around. You know, you bet they oh, the boys being the people the people?

Speaker 2: And no, in fact, you were thinking the opposite, that the boys would be in the timber, yes, sneaking around if they were the elk.

Speaker 2: I’d like one of them, I’d like to put it on the record that when Seth talks about elk hunting and he visualizes how he’d like his elk season to turn out, he often described sneaking through the timber and shooting a bullet close range. So when you texted me like that stuff, oh, I was delighted for you.

Speaker 2: Spend a good long time pumping water and filling up our water bladders. And my buddy bent down to rerig the filter and his can of bear spray hooked on something.

Speaker 2: That, And so this is I’m standing like five feet away and he’s bent over and I just hear this, sorry to the listeners.

Speaker 5: And I thought it was a bear.

Speaker 2: I mean, they should really look into making bear spray deployments not sound like bears, because at first I thought it was just a bear huffing, and then I realized he had just fired off a one second burst of bear spray, and I immediately thought we were going to have to evac As they say, thankfully, it just went straight into his backpack, and once we realized we didn’t have any on our hands or faces, we scrubbed his backpack with snow, and to be honest, a bear could probably smell it, but we couldn’t. Interesting So that yeah, then spotted some elk. Then Saturday mornings, the opener didn’t see any folks saw a lot of elk, and they moved onto public land, which is where we had permission to hunt, and.

Speaker 2: A couple of smaller bulls sneaked across the property line there and I had an opportunity for a shot. It’s my rifle. I placed the bullet accurately and uh tremendous damage. Elk went down quickly, and then we packed it out and we were back sleeping in well, we were sleeping in separate beds, but we were sleeping in bed at my house that night, each each with I had two dogs. He had one.

Speaker 9: It is, yes, first mule deer as a Texan. So you know, not nothing huge, but three by three I was very happy with.

Speaker 9: Yeah, a good end to about five or six days of hunting.

Speaker 2: The first episode of Blood Trails comes out today and it involves the disappearance of a hunter named Bob Christian. Can you tell us a little bit about the facts of the case.

Speaker 9: Yes, So, Bob Christian was an eighteen year old kid. He’s a college freshman. He lived in Madison, Wisconsin, and he had a plan to go hunting on the opening day of archery season. And this was all the way back in nineteen seventy seven, so he was, you know, one of the earlier people to really get into archery, archery hunting white tail, and so the plan was there. He was going to drive up to his buddy’s house in Bearaboo, which is about a forty five minute drive from where he lived. They were going to he was going to spend the night at his friend’s house on Friday. They were going to get up early on Saturday and go hunting. But Bob was supposed to be at his friend’s house around six pm for dinner. But he never showed up. And this was obviously before a cell phone, so they couldn’t just call him, and so they waited and waited and waited. He didn’t show up all, you know. All that Friday night, they went out looking for him, and they found the car he was driving in a kind of a remote area that was actually an area that he had experience hunting in, but that’s not the area that they had planned to hunt. And the weird thing about this is the car was found but all of its wheels and tires had been removed. I think the battery had been removed, a few other things. And so they found the car, they looked inside. Bob wasn’t in there. All of his archery stuff was gone, all of his hunting gear was gone. I think there was a letterman jacket that he owned was still in there, but there was no sign of him. So they searched the area for several days, still couldn’t find him, and to this day, no one knows what happened to him. And there were a few kind of weird things they found out throughout the investigation. A few people saw the car that Friday night driving around. It’s unclear if Bob was the one driving it, and to this day, no one quite knows what happened. So that’s that’s the first episode of Blood Trails.

Speaker 2: So how did you first learn about Bob’s story. It’s a it’s a fifty year old cold case. And yeah, I don’t think anyone here who’s on our radar. How did you find out about this?

Speaker 9: Yeah? So I found out about this because the detective who’s currently in charge of the case for the Saut County Sheriff’s Office, he reached out to me. We put out that first kind of pilot episode of Blood Trails back in March, and he heard about it and he reached out and said, you know, I’m working on this cold case. It’s about a hunter. I think it’s something that you guys could cover on Blood Trails. And he’s really been pushing to get you know, more people, uh, to to get the word out about the case because at this point, there isn’t a whole lot of physical evidence that’s available, and so it really will come down to someone coming forward who knows something, and so he’s trying to trying to get the word out.

Speaker 2: So I assume you you have included that UH investigator in your in your reporting. Who else did you speak to uh while researching this case?

Speaker 9: Yeah, so I talked with the detective of Tyler Poynton, and then he connected me with Bob’s sister, and then also with that friend that he was supposed to meet, And so for this episode, Uh, you know, I I talked with really the the people who have the most knowledge about this case who are still alive. Bob’s parents have passed away, but I was able to talk with his sister, uh, and then and then his friend. So and they are very kind, you know, It’s it’s one of those things that is difficult for them to talk about, but they want to know what happened to their brother and to their friend, and so they were willing to talk with me.

Speaker 2: What what drew you to the story? I mean, obviously there’s a lot of cases like this. Is there is there anything in particular that grabbed your attention when you heard about it?

Speaker 9: I mean, there’s with this particular story, there are some very strange details that are really kind of inexplicable. One of the people who saw Bob’s car saw it it was it had pulled up the driveway of a cabin where a nun lived, and she talked with the person driving the car and he said, I’m looking for my friend Bob. But the description she gave of this person driving Bob’s car looked a lot like Bob, and so that’s difficult to explain. There’s all also a potential connection to the Chicago serial killer John Wayne Gacy, and so that’s you know, and and that’s currently being investigated. We’re actually waiting right now for some DNA results to come back to see if there’s a connection there. So there’s lots of interesting details. I also, I think with this this podcast, you know, a true crime podcast about hunters and anglers, I think our audience has a really unique opportunity to push some of these cases forward because there’ll be people in our audience who are from that area who know the place that that Bob’s car was found, and so they might have some information. And I also think our audience is gonna is going to care about these stories more so than you know, your kind of standard true crime general audience. I think, you know, we we want to figure out what happened to these people who love to do this the same things that we love to do.

Speaker 2: Now, you mentioned, you mentioned that there’s these bizarre details. What’s the most surprising thing you turned up in this in this case during your reporting?

Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I think it’s that John Wayne Gacy connection, which Gaysey was arrested I believe in nineteen seventy eight, so that was just one year after Bob disappeared. And the fact that that we just now are kind of learning about this. The detective who’s in charge got a tip from someone who said that Gaysey did some work at their at there. I believe it was an inn or a hotel. He Gaysey did some work there, which is around the same area that Bob disappeared around the same time. And so they’re they’re looking at some of the DNA from the some Gaysey victims that haven’t been identified. And so just the fact that it’s been almost fifty years and we’re still learning more where there’s still leads to follow, and some of those leads are very surprising and I mean obviously very disturbing. I think that’s was definitely the most surprising thing from this episode.

Speaker 2: M This is obviously just the first of your series. Can you give listeners a sense of what else they can expect in the weeks ahead and how frequently these will be coming out?

Speaker 3: Yeah?

Speaker 9: Yeah, absolutely. So this first season is going to have eight episodes. The first one comes out today and then they’ll come out every Thursday until those those eight episodes are over. And so the next two episodes is going to be a two part series about a there was in nineteen ninety six, a fifteen year old girl was murdered. They couldn’t figure out who did it. Last year they found her killer. It turned out to be a BLM biologist who still lived in the area. He was also big time hunter, very involved in the hunting community, and so those two episodes cover that investigation, how he was found out, and then we really dive into this question of how could someone do this right and then go on to kind of live a normal life. So that’s the next two episodes. The one after that is about a hunter who was murdered with his own rifle. They don’t know who did it. The one after that is a similar kind of disappearance case similar to the Bob Christian case, but there’s a lot more information. Detectives think they know who did it, but they’ve been unable to basically gather enough evidence. There’s a story of a hunter who was stabbed seventeen times. He was found out in the woods and they ruled it a suicide. So we get into that and some of the reasons that the evidence for that. So lots of interesting stuff. This is not a podcast where every story is a cold case and you don’t have a resolution. Some of these stories have been solved, but I would say there’s still a lot of questions, a lot of unanswered questions with which with each of these cases. So really excited to share these stories, and like I said, hopefully we can move some of these cases forward. Hopefully some of our audience will will know something and be able to help out.

Speaker 2: I don’t know, I don’t know who got the monkeys, but I can tell you that a truck carrying twenty one Recis monkeys from Tulane University to a testing facility in Florida overturned just on Tuesday, setting the primates loose. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department posted on Facebook that quote, the monkeys are approximately forty pounds, aggressive to humans, and carry hepatitis, C, herpes, and COVID. Howat, in a separate statement to Lane University, said the monkeys had not been exposed to any of these Sure good people contacted the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, who had no additional comment about the discrepancy and information and referred to follow their social media pages for updates on the case. So if a deer hunter got one of those monkeys, I’m not sure. I assumed it was the Sheriff’s department, But.

Lauren, Welcome to the show. Hello, thank you for joining us. So as I understand it, you needed a replacement set of kiln bass layers after a recent hunt in Wyoming. What were you hunting and when was this?

Speaker 8: It was about five weeks ago. We were hunting archery elk. It was middle of September, and yeah, we were there up near Dubois, Wyoming, hunting elk for about a week and.

Speaker 8: We got into some milk and had a lot of we had a close encounter with a moose. It was just off to a great start and then Friday, on day five, we uh, everything kind of changed.

Speaker 8: Yeah, So we were driving a side by side early morning, so it was still dark and we were about forty five minutes to an hour that we needed to get up a pretty rough road to get where. We had watched some elk go into Septimber the night before, so we felt like we had a good chance, but we needed to get up there before first light. And we’ve driven up that road many times. But for some reason, we were going up and my hunting partner was driving and I was in the passenger seat, and I don’t remember if there was like something in the road or just like a really big pothole or something, and he kind of tried to miss it and we got too close to the edge and there was a we were driving through a burn and there was an old lodge pole tree that was hanging over the edge of the road and when we hit it, it came through the side by side door and went into my leg.

Speaker 6: I will just say I have I have some pictures that Lauren shared with us. There are not gory, but I would say one of them is rather upsetting. At least when I saw it, I got like full body chills. So I’m gonna pull that up a little bit. If you don’t want to see that, look away.

Speaker 8: Any sharp pain or anything, so immediately I just thought that the side by side door kind of like pinned me and my leg was stuck. And then I reached down because he was starting to put it in reverse, and I just kind of had a weird feeling and I reached down and I could feel something going into my leg. So I told him to stop, and I was like, I think something’s in my leg and he’s like, what do you mean? And so I turned on my headlamp and looked down and I could see that that tree was in my leg.

Speaker 8: Around the side of the side by side so we could see if I was still attached to the tree or if the branch had broke, which luckily it had, that would have been a whole another orga trying to get off of that. But yeah, just from the crash, the fender flare of the side by side had enough pressure that it broke the branch or end of the tree actually, but there was about probably about three feet of it hanging off from my leg, and we were able to get the side by side door.

Speaker 8: We were able to get the side by side open and situate the piece of wood into the side by side with me, and I kind of just had to almost stand up with my good leg and hold onto the ceiling of the side by side and keep my legs straight for a twenty minute ride back down the mountain.

Speaker 2: Oh my god. And then what what It’s obviously at some point you got medical attention from first responders.

Speaker 2: Did you drive to the hospital or did they come out to pick you up or what did that look like?

Speaker 10: So I keep a garment in reach for obviously things like this.

Speaker 8: But I knew because we’ve hunted there for a few years, we knew that we were only about twenty minutes from cell service and we needed to get down the mountain anyways. And where we had cell service, we knew an ambulance could get there and there’d be enough room for a helicopter to land. So we got down there, called nine one one, and they sent an ambulance that was stationed down in Doboys, which was only about fifteen minutes from where we were. So they sent an ambulance up and got Ivy started and helped me out with meds and trying to figure out if we were able to drive to a hospital because we’re about an hour and a half from the nearest hospital.

Speaker 5: And at this point I’m sure the pain had set in.

Speaker 8: Yeah, definitely, it was more so like cramping pain, like my muscles were obviously trying to reject whatever was.

Speaker 8: Yeah, and I think with enough adrenaline nothing was sharp pain. But definitely was scared of what kind of outcomes my head.

Speaker 10: But yeah, So we were on.

Speaker 8: The scene for probably about an hour and then they decided they wanted to fly me to a trauma center because we were over four hour drive from the nearest trauma center, and so yeah, they landed a helicopter and flew me to Idaho Falls.

Speaker 2: What after you got to the hospital? What were the extent of your injuries? And how are you doing today.

Speaker 8: I got extremely lucky with the path that the tree went in. It missed bone and arteries and everything that’s super important. It did get my glute muscle a little bit because it went about six inches into my leg, But yeah, I got there. They did some cts really quick, make sure that I didn’t hit any arteries that would cause me to bleed out or anything like that, and I was in surgery within a half hour and they just went in and took it out and cleaned everything. The biggest worry was infection. So the surgeon did really good and got it all cleaned out. And yeah, I’m really lucky. I was walking within two hours of surgery.

In fact, every time we pretty much scouted that area we ran into grizzlies. But yeah, I gutted this thing, rolled the guts down the hill quite a ways away from it, and we left to come back in the morning to cut it up, which you know, in hindsight, I probably would have just stayed there and cut the thing up.

Speaker 7: But that night, so we started hiking back to the truck, and it was well after dark, and the wind picked up and there was like a cold front coming in that night, and so you know, Rick and I we were hustling to get out of there. We kind of stripped down to our bass layers, you know, so we weren’t getting all sweaty. And got back to the truck and Rick was acting real weird. I couldn’t figure out what was going on with him. He could like barely talk. He was kind of drooling a little bit, saying he was real hot. Well, you know, later we figured out that Rick had gotten hypothermia walking.

So this, this bowl I killed in the fall of twenty eighteen, I believe twenty eighteen, twenty seventeen. It was the day after Thanksgiving, and my brother in law was in town from Seattle, and he’s very interested in hunting, and he’s watch his metater and.

Speaker 2: And I had a white tail b tag for a unit west of Missoula, and we thought, well, why don’t we take Jason out in the morning and shoot a white tail dough and show him what hunting’s all about, you know.

Speaker 2: There and it’s basically like a forest service road and we’d hike down to the river and there’s just some openings and see a lot of deer in there. And we passed a truck on the way in, because it’s the day after Thanksgiving. We passed a truck that’s got like eight dudes in it, you know, from ten years old to eighty years old, and they’re like three hundred yards from where we’re parking. We’re like, all right, I guess you know, we’ll get this side. We start walking from the truck, I see a white tailed dough.

Speaker 2: So I’m setting up to shoot this dough and it wanders behind a little like finger ridge that’s you know, like thirty feet tall, just like a little finger going down to the to the river bottom. And so I said, oh, perfect, let’s drop down there. We’ll walk up that finger and she’ll walk up the other side, because she was just kind of feeding up. And so we start walking up this finger and another dough squorts past, and I think to myself, oh, I should every now and then check over my right shoulder instead of just locking in on the left side.

Speaker 2: I’m like, I should check over my right shoulder just to make sure nothing’s over there. And we get a little ways up and I look over my right shoulder and I see this big tan body and I’m thinking, oh, that’s that looks like the color of an elk’s body. And then I look again and I’m like, oh, that looks like the color of an elk’s neck. And then I realized there’s antlers and this thing is bedded broadside to me with just its face behind a tree, like the tree was literally only covering its eye so it didn’t see us. It’s probably at like fifty yards.

Speaker 2: And so Sydney, Sydney and Jason are standing next to me and they’re looking to the left and I hear one of them.

Speaker 2: You know, and uh. And they have no idea what’s happening. And then I start shooting and I shoot this thing. It stands up, two other bulls run off. I shoot it again and it flips over. That shot. Well, well, so Phil, go back, go back, go back, go back, go back, go back.

Speaker 2: So Sydney’s like, Sydney’s like, oh my god, Randall just shot his first bull and like, I’m standing here. I just watched the whole thing. And so she started taking photos of me, like walking down to it. And you’ll see in this photo that it’s lying It’s on a steep slope, its head is kind of tucked under it, and it’s lying there. And we walk down to it. And then you’ll see in the next photo, all of a sudden it’s getting up. And so this thing, as I approached it, it started like donkey kicking, and like I said, it’s head was wrapped under it. So all of a sudden it flips itself up and over like rodeo clown. I am ten feet away from it, and it starts running away, and I’m thinking, it’s going to run to this truck with these other dudes. And I’m just thinking, my first bull is going to be shot by an entire extended clan and they’re gonna have a great Thanksgiving Day and I’m gonna have the bitterest Thanksgiving weekend of all time. So then I start shooting it again. So Phil, if you’ll proceed, So we have this whole sequence of photos of it standing up again.

Speaker 4: Glassed up Elk the night before, which back then opener was on a Sunday. Anybody miss those days? And so Saturday, I remember glassing up or Herd Elk. My dad and I walked up in the dark by trying to get you know, ahead of everybody else that we could see rolling in with their campers. And we get up on this saddle and then looking down below us just see headlamps galore coming up towards us, you know. So we’re like, okay, well we should be in the right spot. This is, you know, a few hundred yards away from everybody else. Yeah, of course sun comes up elkra Gone. So we’re kind of bumming. We hike up above the saddle to the top of the hill and lo and behold, here comes this lone bowl tongue just dragging as if he got bumped by somebody else. I want to say, it’s first forty five minutes of light.

Speaker 4: Three hundred excuse me, this was a thirty six I want to say, like sixty yards away, dumped him one shot. Fantastic and yeah, I was pretty tickled, pretty blown away. And as we were packing him out, took multiple trips to get him out, just my dad and I, and we passed this young gall who had harvested a giant six point right by the trailhead. Oh, they’ve admitted they got a late start, you know, and came up after first light and everybody he had walked right by this stud six point bowl in the dark.

Speaker 1: This is a good question for you. Ah yeah, it sounds like that was too long. I believe it in the Meat Eater cookbook it’s like six to eight. If that happens, you can desalt a Brian turkey breast by just putting it into just plain cold water, and it’ll actually suck through osmosis the salt will come back out into the water. But yeah, I guess you could. You could check it by just cutting a little sliver off the turkey breast next time, frying it real quick and eating it and seeing how salty it is.
