Have Gun, Will Travel: Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States

In the constantly evolving world of Constitutional carry, shall-issue carry permits and other firearm-related laws, traveling across state lines can see significant changes. The concealed-carrier needs to be aware of all of these, and a handy reference guide really helps. For the 29th year in a row, attorney J. Scott Kappas has checked the various state laws as they pertain to open and concealed carry in all 50 of the United States.

The “Traveler’s Guide” starts off with a single-page list of changes to various state laws since the previous edition, immediately presenting the most pertinent differences from the previous year. A brief section on how to use the guide follows, with various terms defined (“concealed” vs. “plain view,” for example) along with discussions on reciprocity, open carry, self-defense, traffic stops and prohibited areas as these all pertain to the armed citizen traveling out of his or her home state.

The majority of the book centers on individual states, with a standard format: At the top of the page is a quick-reference bar that rates the state’s firearm friendliness on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 represents total prohibition and 100 represents total freedom.

If you travel with your EDC pistol, your competition rifle or just a defensive carbine, the “Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States” is an invaluable reference. It’s not legal counsel, and you should always research the laws of the areas in and through which you travel, but this guide is a great place to start.
