First Look: Steelhead Underbed Safes

Steelhead Outdoors has just launched a product line consisting of under bed safes for homeowners interested in securely storing home defense long guns in a discreet, yet easily accessible location.

Steelhead Outdoors Undercover 48 under-bed safes measure 48 inches wide, 6 inches tall and 16 inches deep. Inside, these under-bed safes provide enough space to secure a long gun, multiple handguns or other valuables. Internally, these safes are foam padded and lined in order to protect firearm finishes. Thanks to their shape, Steelhead Outdoors Undercover 48 safes also lend themselves well to fitting and being stowed in other areas around a habitation including closets, cabinetry, mudrooms, under benches or even in vehicles (securely).

The two Undercover 48 models differ in lock styles. The Steelhead Outdoors Undercover 48X relies on a genuine Simplex mechanical lock that is free of batteries or other electronics. It also doesn’t require the use of keys. This model has an MSRP of $1,100. On the other hand, the Undercover 48E features a biometric Securam Scanlogic electronic lock with fingerprint and combination access. UL lists this lock as “high security” and it’s paired with two hardplates to protect it from direct penetration. The Undercover 48E retails for a slightly higher price at $1,300.

“The Simplex Undercover offers fast access to an Made-In-USA underbed safe. This is a great option for someone who doesn’t want to think about batteries and keys,” explained Steelhead Outdoors co-founder Corey Meyer. “When time counts, Simplex Undercover owners can quickly access the firearms stowed under their bed.”
