First Look: Shell Tech 308 NAS3 Prograde Ammo

Shell Shock Technologies is launching a new line of .308 Win. rifle cartridges using its steel NAS3 cartridge case technology. The new offering is called Shell Tech 308 NAS3 Prograde Ballistic Tip Ammo and is loaded with Nosler’s signature .308-caliber, 150-grain Ballistic Tip bullets.

“The introduction of our 308 NAS3 PROGRADE Ballistic Tip Ammo represents a major step forward in our commitment to innovation, performance and reliability,” said Peter Foss, Managing Partner and CEO of Shell Shock Technologies. “By combining our advanced NAS3 casing with Nosler’s proven Ballistic Tip technology, we’ve created a cartridge that gives hunters the confidence they need in the field: accuracy at extended ranges, flat velocity and the stopping power to make every shot count.”

The new Shell Tech 308 NAS3 Prograde Ballistic Tip ammunition uses the 150-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip projectile because of the performance benefits that projectile offers, such as controlled expansion, deep penetration and reliable weight retention over a wide variety of muzzle velocities. These projectiles make use of a polymer ballistic tip on the front and a “Ballistically Engineered Solid Base” at the back of the bullet. When combined with the NAS3 steel cartridge casings and the propellants that Shell Shock Technologies loads, the Shell Tech 308 NAS3 Prograde Ballistic Tip cartridge is capable of above-average performance and flatter trajectories compared to similar 150-grain bullets loaded in traditional brass cartridge casings.

One of the main reasons for this ballistic performance upgrade is because the NAS3 steel case technology is both thinner and lighter, but stronger and more efficient in comparison to traditional brass cases. The reduction in overall mass in a .308 Win. casing allows for approximately 8-percent more propellant capacity which in turn provides more “fuel” for the bullet to fly faster (and flatter).
