Luth-AR recently launched a brand-new aftermarket bull-barrel option for rimfire shooters who build rifles around Ruger 10/22-pattern actions.
Luth-AR’s new Ruger 10/22 pattern bull barrel is turned from a 416 R stainless steel blank and measures 18 inches long. Its muzzle is cut for ½x28 tpi threads while its barrel twist consists of the standard rimfire 1:16-inch, ideal for 40-grain .22 LR cartridges.
Bull barrels are optimized for target-shooting applications for several reasons. First, the additional weight and heft act as ballast towards a rifle which makes them easier to hold steady. Second, the extra weight means that they’re less likely to move during recoil. For the shooter, this translates to an easier time keeping their sights on target. While not as critical for rimfire options, thicker bull barrels do increase the degree of stiffness which helps with accuracy and consistency since lighter barrels can flex and “whip” during the firing sequence.
The semi-automatic Ruger 10/22 action is perhaps the most popular semi-automatic rimfire action in production. It’s simple and reliable and since it has been around for decades, many high-level rifle builders have figured out how to wring high levels of performance from 10/22s. Not to mention, accessories like the Luth-AR 10/22 bull barrel are widely available.
