Xbox Gamers Are Reportedly Having Problems Playing Backwards Compatible Xbox 360 Titles

It seems Xbox gamers have been having a hard time playing their Xbox 360 games, as some Series X owners haven’t been able to launch their seventh-gen favorites for weeks or even months. The Xbox Backward Compatibility program has been a mostly flawless experience for users throughout the years; however, this most recent bump in the road for one of Xbox’s most popular features has led to multiple upset customers.

The Backward Compatibility initiative at Xbox launched in 2015 for the Xbox One after outcry from fans that the console had no proper last-gen support. It originally launched with 104 games, including some Xbox heavy hitters like Gears of War and Mass Effect, with a promise to continue growing the program over time. Since then, the number of games in the program has grown to a massive 632 games for the Xbox 360 and 63 for the original Xbox. Unfortunately, the Xbox Backward Compatibility program ended in 2021, citing licensing issues as the major hurdle preventing the team from doing more. However, at GDC 2026, Microsoft announced that it would bring back Xbox’s Backward Compatibility program in some capacity later this year.

Xbox Fans Haven’t Been Able to Play Classic Xbox 360 Games for Months

Unfortunately, Xbox’s Backward Compatibility program has hit a snag, as users on Reddit and across social media have reported they cannot access their Xbox 360 library on their Xbox Series X consoles, citing a connection error with Xbox Live. Players affected say their internet connection is working properly and that their Xbox Series X games are working without issue. The problems only start when players launch an Xbox 360 title. However, it doesn’t seem that all players are affected the same way; some report that no Xbox 360 games work for them at all, while others report that some games work while others don’t. Xbox Support has issued an official statement on social media stating that the team is actively investigating why some users can’t play “select backwards compatible Xbox 360 games.”

Users in the comments sections of both X and Reddit state that this has been going on for some time, with some users affected as early as November, but there does seem to be some explanation for why this is happening. In one Reddit thread, user GR1NTER shared a support message from Xbox claiming that newer consoles are likely having trouble playing Xbox 360 games because they have not yet established a network link for entitlement checks and content delivery. Essentially, newer consoles aren’t yet validated on the proper servers and are more likely to have issues than older consoles that have already been established on those servers. As of this writing, this hasn’t been confirmed as an official explanation, and the problem remains unsolved.
