For military families, travel isn’t always about getting away. Sometimes it’s driving across three states for a graduation. Sometimes it’s catching a last-minute flight home for the holidays. Sometimes it’s another PCS, another temporary hotel, another airport, another goodbye.
And sometimes it’s simply trying to make the journey a little less stressful, if that’s even possible.
I still think about the time I was flying home from Germany after the airport had been closed due to the weather. I had two kids under 3, eight bags, two car seats – and no husband because he’d slipped on the ice the day before and broken his leg in two places.
Military life has a way of making airports, hotels and highways feel surprisingly ordinary. Whether it’s visiting family, relocating to a new duty station, attending training or planning a well-earned vacation after a deployment, many military families spend more time in airports, hotels and rental cars than they ever expected.
That’s why choosing a travel credit card isn’t just about earning rewards. It’s about finding one that reflects how military families actually travel.
Travel Looks Different for Military Families
Military travel is often unpredictable. Orders change. Flights get rebooked. Leave windows shift. You may find yourself booking airfare with only a few weeks’ notice or spending unexpected nights in hotels during a move.
The costs can add up quickly.
I’ll never forget our first PCS. We didn’t know what benefits we were entitled to, so we stayed in inexpensive motels as we made our way to Sierra Vista, Arizona. Then suddenly the hotels jumped to $130 a night. I remember sitting there crying, wondering how we were going to afford several more nights.
Now I laugh about it. On our last move, we were a family of five, plus a dog, and spent 10 nights in a hotel waiting for our house to be ready. I barely blinked.
That’s why travel rewards are often most valuable when they’re built around the purchases military families already make—not categories that sound impressive but don’t match real life.
Rewards That Match Real-Life Travel
Navy Federal Credit Union’s Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Card1 was designed with that practical approach in mind.
Rather than focusing on luxury perks that many travelers may rarely use, the card emphasizes rewards in the categories members actually spend while traveling, including airfare, hotels, dining and transit.
Cardholders earn:
- 4X points on travel purchases, including airfare, hotels, cruises and transit.
- 3X points on dining
- 1X points on all other purchases.
For families who travel regularly, those reward points can add up surprisingly quickly when you’re already paying for flights, hotels and transit during PCS moves, family visits or military travel.
Convenience Matters Just as Much as Rewards
Ask almost any military family what makes travel stressful, and chances are the answer isn’t just the cost.
It’s the security lines that seem to take forever. It’s rushing through security with a double stroller and a dog. And it’s trying to stay connected while navigating unfamiliar places.
Those little inconveniences can quickly turn an already long travel day into an exhausting one. That’s why convenience has become just as valuable as rewards.
The card includes a $100 annual airline statement credit2 to help offset travel expenses throughout the year. It also offers up to a $120 statement credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓®, helping members move through airport security more efficiently.
For members traveling internationally, the complimentary GigSky® mobile data plan helps them stay connected without scrambling to find Wi-Fi or purchasing a separate data plan after landing.
For military families accustomed to adapting on the fly, those practical benefits can remove some of the friction that often comes with travel.
Premium Benefits Without a Premium Price Tag
Many premium travel credit cards charge annual fees that leave families wondering whether they’ll actually receive enough value.
Navy Federal positioned this card differently. With a $95 annual fee, it offers many of the travel-focused benefits frequent travelers look for while remaining accessible for members who travel only for vacations.
It’s also Navy Federal’s first-ever metal credit card – a premium design that reflects its place as the credit union’s newest travel-focused offering.
Making Military Travel Work a Little Harder for You
Military families can’t always control when or why they’ll travel. But they can choose tools that help make those trips more rewarding.
Whether you’re earning points on flights home, using transit during a PCS, using airline statement credits to visit loved ones or moving through airport security a little faster, practical benefits can make a noticeable difference over time.
Military families already spend money on airfare, hotels, baggage fees and transit simply because military life requires it. If those purchases are going to happen anyway, it makes sense to earn rewards that can help offset future travel – even if that next trip is simply flying home for the holidays.
Military life is built around movement, whether it’s across town or across the world. The right travel rewards card won’t eliminate delayed flights or unexpected orders, but it can help make every mile – and every trip — a little more worthwhile.
1Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Cards earn 4 points for every $1 of eligible purchases made on travel, 3 points for every $1 of eligible purchases made at restaurants (dining), and 1 point for every $1 of other eligible purchases. Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services, minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do not include fees, interest charges, balance transfers, gambling, convenience checks, cash advances, or other cash-equivalents (e.g., money orders, gift cards, prepaid cards). Merchants are assigned codes by payment networks based on what they primarily sell. We rely on this information to identify travel and restaurant purchases. Travel is typically coded as airline, hotel, car rental, bus lines, taxis, cruise lines, time shares, parking, rideshare, and transit. A travel or restaurant purchase may only earn 1 point per dollar spent, depending on the code used to process the transaction. If the purchase is not identified as a travel or restaurant purchase, it will receive 1 point per dollar spent. For example, purchases made at restaurants within another establishment (e.g., casino, grocery store, event venue) may not be assigned a restaurant code, which means they will only receive 1 point per dollar spent. For more information, view the Program Description for the Flagship Premier Card.
2Receive a $100 statement credit each year after you spend a total of $100 or more on eligible airline purchases using your Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Card. Your eligibility for the credit begins on the date your account is opened and renews each year on that date. This date appears in the Member Since field under My Profile in the Navy Federal Rewards Center. Any unused credit will not carry over to the next year. The $100 spending requirement may be met through a single purchase or multiple purchases totaling at least $100. Merchants are assigned codes by payment networks based on what a business primarily sells. Only purchases coded as airlines or air carriers qualify as eligible airline purchases and will count toward the required $100 or more to earn the statement credit. Charter or private jet flights do not qualify. After the $100 in eligible airline purchases posts to your account, it may take 6-8 weeks for the statement credit to appear. The statement credit may not be posted or may be reversed if the purchase(s) is/are canceled, modified, or returned. Your account must be open and not in default when the statement credit is scheduled to post to your account. Only the primary cardholder is eligible for this credit. Purchases made by authorized users count toward the $100 spending requirement. Navy Federal may modify or end this offer at any time without notice.
