Monthly Drill: Thinking Man’s Game

Monthly Drill: Thinking Man’s Game

Sharpen Your Mind, Not Just Your Aim. Looking to level up your shooting skills? This is more than just a marksmanship drill—it’s a mental workout.

Monthly Drill: Thinking Man's Game
Part 7 from our 12-part series Built for Readiness

The “Thinking Man’s Game” is designed to enhance a shooter’s ability to identify and prioritize targets in dynamic scenarios. By engaging targets first by size and then by alphabetical order, this drill forces shooters to process information quickly while maintaining accuracy under time pressure. Suitable for both pistol and rifle, this drill builds mental agility and precision, critical skills for real-world applications. Want to push your limits? Try increasing the engagement distance or engaging targets in reverse alphabetic order for an added challenge.

Drill Execution

  1. Start Position: Shooter is at low ready or holstered (for pistol) with the firearm loaded and ready.
  2. On the Start Signal:
    1. Engage each target with 1 round in order from largest to smallest (5 shots total).
    2. Re-engage each target with 1 round in alphabetical order (5 shots total).
  3. Makeup Shots: If a miss occurs, the shooter may fire additional rounds to hit the missed target(s) before completing the sequence.
  4. Total Shots: 10 rounds minimum (5 for size order, 5 for alphabetic order), plus any makeup shots for misses.

Scoring

●      Time Only: Record the total time from the start signal to the last shot.

●      All targets must be hit in the correct order (largest to smallest, then alphabetically).

●      Misses require makeup shots, which add to the total time.

Challenge Variations

●      Increased Distance: Move targets farther away (e.g., 15-25 yards for pistol, 50-100 yards for rifle) to increase difficulty.

●      Reverse Alphabetic Order: Engage the second sequence in reverse alphabetic order (E to A) to heighten cognitive demand.

●      Movement: Add lateral or forward movement between the first and second sequences to simulate dynamic scenarios.

Safety Notes

●      Ensure a safe range setup with a proper backstop.

●      Follow all firearm safety rules.

Tips for Success

●      Mentally rehearse the target order (size and alphabetic) before starting.

●      Focus on smooth transitions between targets to minimize time.

●      Practice trigger control to avoid misses, as makeup shots will increase your time.

●      For the reverse alphabetic order challenge, pre-plan the sequence (E, D, C, B, A) to reduce hesitation.
