One of the most consistently underused benefits available to service members and their families is also one of the simplest to access: free, confidential, nonmedical counseling through Military OneSource, up to 12 sessions per issue, with no referral, no diagnosis and no reporting back to anyone’s chain of command.
What It Actually Covers
Military OneSource counseling is designed to be short-term and solution-focused, aimed at the everyday pressures of military life rather than clinical mental health treatment. That includes relationship and marital communication problems, parenting challenges, grief and loss, stress management, deployment and reintegration adjustment, anxiety, self-esteem, loneliness and working through a major life decision. Counselors hold a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, social work or marriage and family counseling, and are licensed to practice independently.
What it doesn’t cover is the diagnosis or treatment of a mental health condition. If a counselor determines during the initial assessment that a situation requires clinical care rather than short-term support, Military OneSource refers the service member or family member to Tricare or a nearby military treatment facility instead.

How Sessions and Confidentiality Work
Eligible users get up to 12 sessions per issue, per family member, at no cost. Sessions are available four ways:
- Face-to-face with a counselor in the local community
- By phone
- Through secure online chat
- Via secure live video
In-person sessions are arranged with a counselor within roughly 30 miles of the service member or family member’s home. Chat and phone counseling are limited to adults 18 and older; children ages 6 to 17 can be seen in person or by video; and kids 6 to 12 attend with a parent or caregiver present as a family session.

The confidentiality protection is the part most people underestimate. Nothing discussed in a session is reported to the chain of command, shared with family or friends, or released to other agencies, and using the benefit has no effect on a security clearance or career progression.
There are narrow legal exceptions: Counselors are required by law to report illegal activity or situations involving danger to the individual or others, including suspected domestic violence or child or elder abuse.

Contact happens through Military OneSource’s 24/7 call center at 800-342-9647 or through live chat at militaryonesource.mil. A consultant confirms eligibility, authorizes sessions if appropriate, and explains the scope and limits of confidentiality before making a referral. For in-person counseling, users typically have 30 days after authorization to schedule a first session; if that window is missed, contacting Military OneSource again restarts the process.
A related but distinct resource is the Military and Family Life Counseling Program, which places licensed counselors directly at or near installations for walk-in-style, on-the-spot support rather than a scheduled referral process. Both programs are free and can be used independently of each other depending on what fits a given situation.
