FPS Games With Near-Perfect Scores Everywhere

FPS Games With Near-Perfect Scores Everywhere

First-person shooters are everywhere, but only a few manage to earn high scores from both critics and everyday players at the same time. Scores in the high 80s or 90s are not rare in the genre, but reaching that level on multiple platforms at once, and holding it over time, is not mere luck.

These FPS titles understand what they want to be. Some are built around fast, precise shooting where every movement matters. And there are those that focus on teamwork, giving players clear roles that make co-op feel natural and rewarding. Near-perfect ratings across platforms like OpenCritic and Steam show that these titles get a lot of things right, which we will try to highlight below.

Doom Eternal

One of the Best Fast-Paced FPS Games

  • OpenCritic Score: 89%
  • Steam Score: 91%

Doom Eternal takes the foundation of its predecessor and takes it to a whole new level. Players step back into the boots of the legendary Doom Slayer, but this time around, the combat demands much more than just holding down the trigger and running in circles. Players have to manage resources in this FPS. They have to use the chainsaw to get ammunition, burn enemies with the flame belch to get armor, and perform brutal glory kills to regain health. This constant resource loop makes every battle a tense and rewarding test of skill.

Doom Eternal is a masterpiece of aggressive combat that refuses to let players rest for even a single second. It is a definitive title for anyone looking to push their shooting skills to the limit.

Quake 2 Remaster

A Classic Refined Without Losing Its Soul

Microsoft's AI-generated Quake 2 demo faces backlash from fans

  • OpenCritic Score: 89%
  • Steam Score: 94%

Quake 2 remaster does way more than just stretch out old textures to fit modern monitors. The core game, first released in 1997, already had strong gunplay, large levels, and a sci-fi setting that stood out at the time. This remaster, handled by Nightdive Studios, upgrades visuals with better lighting, improved models, and smoother performance. At the same time, it keeps the original feel intact, which is important for longtime fans.

One of the coolest things about the remastered version is how much content is included. Alongside the base game, players get a brand-new campaign called “Call of the Machine.” That adds real value, instead of just offering a visual upgrade. Multiplayer also returns with modern support. Local and online play make it easier to enjoy the game with others, something that helped define Quake 2 back in the day.

DUSK

Retro Horror Shooter Done Right

24 Great Story-Driven FPS Games PLayer shoots some eldrich horrors with a shotgun

  • OpenCritic Score: 89%
  • Steam Score: 97%

In a world filled with modern AAA shooters, DUSK came to prove that the spirit of the 90s is still very much alive and well. This is one of the FPS games that draws inspiration from Doom, Quake, and Half-Life. Players fight through rural farmlands, underground laboratories, and bizarre cult compounds while wielding an aggressive arsenal of weapons that includes dual shotguns, crossbows, and even sickles. The gameplay is blazingly fast and encourages players to keep moving, bunny hopping, and circle-strafing to avoid enemy attacks.

DUSK is surprisingly quite interactive. It includes interactive objects at nearly immersive sim levels. Players can pick up bars of soap, cigar boxes, and other random items to mess around with the environment in fun and unexpected ways.

Mullet Madjack

Fast-Paced Chaos in the 1990s Cyberpunk

Shooting enemies in Mullet Madjack

  • OpenCritic Score: 88%
  • Steam Score: 97%

If there is one game on this list that feels like a pure shot of dopamine directly to the brain, it is Mullet Madjack. This indie title is a hyper-stylized FPS that feels like stepping right into a classic 1980s or 1990s cyberpunk anime. The core mechanic of the game is brilliantly simple yet pretty stressful. A player’s life force is tied to a ten-second timer that constantly ticks down.

The only way to replenish the timer and stay alive is to kill the evil robobillionaires scattered across each floor. This creates a frantic, momentum-driven experience where stopping for even a single second means certain death. Weapons in Mullet Madjack are easy to understand, allowing players to focus on movement and survival. The fast pacing turns each level into a short, high-energy challenge.

Borderlands 2

One of the Best Looter-Shooters

Attacking enemies as Krieg in Borderlands 2

  • OpenCritic Score: 86%
  • Steam Score: 90%

Borderlands 2 is one of the best looter-shooters out there. Players basically fight enemies, collect loot, and upgrade their characters. There’s a huge variety of weapons in Borderlands 2. Guns are generated with different stats, effects, and designs, which means players are always finding something new. This constant reward system keeps the experience exciting even after many hours.

The story and characters also play a big role in why the game is great. The main villain, Handsome Jack, is often praised for his personality and writing. His presence adds humor and tension throughout the game. The overall tone mixes comedy with action, which makes it a bit more entertaining than the more serious shooters.
