A shooting between comrades stationed at U.S. Army Fort Carson, Colorado, ended in the death of one soldier and the arrest of another. According to a press release from the Pueblo Police Department, the suspect, 23-year-old Army Private Kalob Deyo, has been charged with manslaughter in the death of his 19-year-old friend and fellow soldier, Private First Class Dasan Johnny Slim Halona.
Deyo’s first court appearance was scheduled for Friday, August 28.
Pueblo Police confirmed some of the details of the incident to Military.com, and made clear the shooting did not occur at Fort Carson, but in the City of Pueblo.
The police department would not immediately release Deyo’s arrest affidavit. Instead, the department’s press release posted to Facebook said Deyo was arrested on Thursday, August 20, 2026, after officers were dispatched to a home in the 600 block of Acero Avenue on a report of a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers found Halona dead in the kitchen with a gunshot wound to the head. They said Deyo was also in the home and was taken into custody for questioning and then charged with manslaughter.
According to the local newspaper, the Pueblo Chieftain, the affidavit claims Deyo and others at the home had been heavily drinking, and a firearm was recovered at the scene.
Deyo reportedly told police he believed the gun’s ammunition had been removed, and that the firearm was not loaded when he pulled the trigger. Fort Carson public affairs confirmed to Military.com that both soldiers were stationed at Fort Carson, with Deyo’s date of service beginning in June 2023, and Halona’s date of service beginning in June 2025.
Under Colorado law, probable cause can be found for a manslaughter charge when there’s evidence a suspect acted recklessly with a firearm.
Fort Carson public affairs office referred all questions about the shooting to the Pueblo Police Department. The deadly shooting marks the city’s 11th homicide of 2026. There were ten homicides year-to-date in 2025.
Deyo’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 2.
