Coast Guard Awards .8 Million Contract for New Family Housing in Alaska

The U.S. Coast Guard has awarded a new contract for the construction of housing and maintenance support buildings.

The USCG awarded the contract, worth $9.8 million, to Orion Construction Inc. of Wasilla, Alaska, to build six housing units and one maintenance support building in Seward, Alaska.

These buildings will house Coast Guard personnel and their families so that personnel are prepared and ready for critical missions, the USCG said in a statement.

“These new housing units and maintenance facility are essential to supporting our personnel and families as we expand the Coast Guard footprint in Seward,” said Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander, U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District, in a statement. “This investment gives our crews safe, modern accommodations and strengthens our ability to achieve operational excellence and mission success in Alaska and the Arctic region.”

The six houses will be four four-bedroom houses and two three-bedroom units. One is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and they will be built in duplexes.

The contract was awarded on July 20, 2026, and the USCG announced the contract in a press release issued on Tuesday.

Housing Unit Developments

It comes after the USCG awarded two task orders in May 2026 to the Tudor Perini Corporation to construct 30 housing units and a child development center at Base Kodiak in Alaska.

Taken together, the task orders were worth more than $140 million.

“These new housing units and child development center represent a significant investment in the well-being of Coast Guard families stationed at Base Kodiak,” Capt. John Barresi, deputy assistant commandant of the Program Executive Office Shore, said in a statement at the time. “By expanding access to quality housing, modern facilities, and essential services, we are ensuring our personnel and their families have the support they need to thrive, allowing our workforce to remain focused on fulfilling the Coast Guard’s vital mission in this region.”

Other Coast Guard Contracts

Meanwhile, the contracts also follow a flurry of other recent procurements by the service.

The Coast Guard recently finalized two contracts to construct six new icebreaker ships.

The ships, called Arctic Security Cutters (ASCs), will be worth a combined $3.3 billion and will expand the Coast Guard’s polar-capable fleet. ASCs are used to protect key shipping lanes, protect energy and mineral resources, and defend Alaskan borders.

They will also be used to facilitate maritime commerce and respond to crises in the region, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

It also started a $32 million airfield reconstruction project in North Carolina, which involves modernizing Runway 1-19 at Base Elizabeth City, in Northeastern North Carolina. In partnership with the contractor RQ Construction, the efforts involve rebuilding the runway, upgrading the taxiways, and installing new airfield lighting.

Construction of the new housing units is expected to be completed by January 2028.
