Call of Duty 2026 Reportedly Coming to a Surprising Platform

Published May 4, 2026, 11:23 AM EDT

The Call of Duty franchise’s major 2026 release may see a full launch on an unexpected platform, according to recent leaks about the game.

The next Call of Duty game could come to last-gen consoles at launch, with the game reportedly being tested on PlayStation 4. The Call of Duty franchise has continued to release its new games on previous-generation consoles, even six years after the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The newest entry in the beloved shooter franchise has seen plenty of rumors ahead of its official reveal. Early information has heavily suggested that the 2026 release for the franchise will return to the Modern Warfare subseries, with leaks from June 2025 suggesting that the next Call of Duty will be set in the Korean peninsula. Rumors have also suggested that the story for Modern Warfare 4 will directly follow Modern Warfare 3, centering on a new conflict with Makarov and the Konni Group. Now, recent information about the next Call of Duty game suggests that it may be staying on last-gen consoles for another year.

A recent report shared by prominent Call of Duty leaker Alaix offers a major hint about the next Call of Duty game’s release. The leaker claims that early versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 are being playtested on the PlayStation 4. The report likely indicates that Activision and Infinity Ward intend to bring the 2026 Call of Duty game to older consoles, with PS4 and Xbox One versions releasing alongside the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. Activision and Infinity Ward have yet to confirm the next Call of Duty, not yet confirming its official title or release date.

While few details about the next Call of Duty have been officially revealed, leaks have already begun to hint at some of its new content. A leak shared in late 2025 suggests that the rumored Modern Warfare 4‘s multiplayer may not see many notable upgrades, said to be a “complete copy” of the gameplay for Modern Warfare 2. Leaks have also suggested that the popular DMZ game mode will be coming back with the next game, with new maps tailor-made for the game mode also said to be added. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is rumored to be releasing in October 2026.

The future of the Call of Duty franchise has been subject to a plethora of rumors in recent months. Leaks suggested that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was originally intended to be a launch title for Microsoft’s next Xbox console, with Activision also considering the potential for multiple games debuting with the platform’s release. A standalone Zombies game was the subject of numerous rumors, though Activision was quick to quash those claims.
