Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned after 18 months in the job, the White House confirmed Monday. His departure follows months of reported friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Driscoll submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump, according to the White House, and The Wall Street Journal first reported his departure. An Army official told CNN that Driscoll “spoke to the president about the current state of the Army and submitted his resignation.”
The White House did not give a reason for the departure, but tensions between Driscoll and Hegseth have been widely reported for months.
In a statement, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly praised Driscoll, saying he had “been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda” and had provided “outstanding leadership” at the Department of the Army.
His exit is the latest in a series of departures among the Pentagon’s top ranks. Navy Secretary John Phelan and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George were both pushed out this spring.
Driscoll was tapped last year for a role atypical for an Army secretary, helping to negotiate an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
