10 Military Spouse Benefits That Have Nothing to Do With Health Care

10 Military Spouse Benefits That Have Nothing to Do With Health Care

Military spouses navigate one of the more demanding lives in the American civilian experience: frequent moves, solo household management during deployments, career restarts and community-rebuilding from scratch every two to three years. The benefit package attached to that life is more substantial than most spouses realize, and most of it has nothing to do with Tricare. Here are 10 benefits that fall outside health care entirely and are consistently underused.

1. Commissary and Exchange Access

Military spouses with a valid military ID have full access to commissary grocery stores and exchange retail outlets on base. Commissary prices average 20%-30% below civilian grocery prices because the commissary operates at cost plus a small surcharge. Exchange stores offer additional savings, and the benefit extends online, so military spouses can shop ShopMyExchange.com tax-free from anywhere in the world, which matters particularly during deployments and overseas tours.

2. Free Legal Assistance Through JAG

Military spouses are entitled to free legal assistance from installation Judge Advocate General offices. Services include will preparation, power of attorney documents, notary services, lease reviews, landlord-tenant dispute advice, tax guidance and general civil legal consultation. This is one of the most underutilized benefits in the military family toolkit. A civilian estate attorney charges hundreds of dollars for services JAG provides at no cost. Call your installation legal office before the deployment, not during it.

3. Federal Hiring Preference and Noncompetitive Authority

Military spouses qualify for a noncompetitive hiring pathway into federal government positions under Executive Order 13473. This means eligible spouses can be appointed to competitive service positions without going through the standard open competition process, a significant advantage in a system in which federal jobs are typically highly competitive. The preference applies to spouses who have relocated on PCS orders and is time-limited, expiring when the sponsor’s orders expire or when the spouse accepts or declines a position. Use USAJOBS and filter for positions where military spouse preference applies. The preference also extends to telework-eligible federal positions, making it usable regardless of where a PCS move takes you.

4. MyCAA Scholarship: Up to $4,000 for Portable Credentials

The My Career Advancement Account Scholarship, now operating under the SpouseWorks program, provides up to $4,000 in tuition assistance for eligible military spouses pursuing licenses, certifications and associate degrees in portable career fields. Eligibility in 2026 covers spouses of active-duty service members and Title 10 National Guard and reserve members in pay grades E-1 through E-9, W-1 through W-3, and O-1 through O-3, the broadest eligibility in the program’s history following an October 2024 expansion. Apply through mycaa.militaryonesource.mil before starting any coursework. Funding does not apply retroactively.

5. Professional License Transfer Reimbursement

Military spouses who hold a state-issued professional license in nursing, teaching, real estate, counseling, cosmetology and dozens of other fields — and who relocate on PCS orders to a state that requires relicensure — can be reimbursed up to $1,000 per move for the costs of transferring that credential. The reimbursement is established in the 2018 NDAA and remains in effect in 2026. Track every fee, exam cost and application charge associated with the relicensure process, and save your receipts. Many spouses miss this reimbursement because they do not know it exists or do not document the costs in time. The deadline and submission process vary by branch, confirm with your installation finance office.

6. Space-A Travel

Military spouses traveling with their sponsor can fly space-available on military aircraft at no cost or very low cost when seats are unfilled. Destinations include international locations served by military air routes including Europe, Japan and Korea. Space-A requires flexibility: Departure times are not guaranteed, seats fill on a priority basis, and plans can change on short notice. But for families willing to work with that unpredictability, it represents a genuinely significant travel benefit. Register through the Air Mobility Command passenger terminal at your installation or online. Spouses traveling without their sponsor are not eligible for space-A on most routes.

7. MWR Programs and Facilities

Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs on military installations cover a range of services available to military spouses at reduced or no cost: fitness centers and pools, youth sports programs, child care and hourly care facilities, outdoor recreation equipment rentals, hobby shops, bowling alleys, golf courses, movie theaters and lodging at Armed Forces Recreation Centers worldwide. Installation MWR programs vary significantly in scope depending on the size and location of the base, but the entitlement travels with the military spouse ID. Military spouses at larger installations who are not using MWR are leaving real savings on the table every month.

8. Free Career Coaching Through SECO

The Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, administered through Military OneSource, provides free career coaching, resume assistance, job search guidance and education planning to military spouses, regardless of the sponsor’s branch, pay grade or duty status. SECO coaches have specific expertise in the challenges military spouses face, explaining resume gaps to civilian employers, navigating frequent relocation, identifying portable career fields and connecting spouses to MyCAA funding and federal hiring pathways. Access is through militaryonesource.mil or by calling 800-342-9647.

9. On-Base School Enrollment and Interstate Compact

Military children have access to Department of Defense Education Activity schools on installations overseas and at select domestic installations, schools that are fully funded federally and consistently rated among the highest-performing in the country. For families at installations without DoDEA schools, the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, now adopted by all 50 states, protects military children’s educational continuity during moves by standardizing enrollment, course credit transfer, graduation requirements and extracurricular eligibility. Military spouses managing a mid-year school transition can invoke compact protections directly with the receiving school district.

10. Military OneSource’s Free Counseling and Financial Services

Military OneSource provides up to 12 free nonmedical counseling sessions per issue per year to military spouses through licensed counselors available in person, by phone or online. It also offers free financial counseling, tax preparation assistance through the MilTax program, relocation assistance, language translation services and a 24-hour support line. MilTax is a particular value: It is H&R Block software provided free to military families, including spouses, covering state and federal returns at no cost, regardless of income or return complexity. Access everything through militaryonesource.mil or 800-342-9647.

One thing that unlocks most of these benefits: a current military ID and a current DEERS enrollment. If either is out of date after a name change, a new PCS or a status change, benefits stop working before most spouses realize something is wrong. Update DEERS at milConnect.dmdc.osd.mil after every life event.
