10 FPS Games That Are Bonafide 10/10 Masterpieces

10 FPS Games That Are Bonafide 10/10 Masterpieces

First-person shooters are one of the most crowded genres in gaming, but only a few reach a level where players call them perfect. These are the games that feel complete from start to finish. The shooting is smooth, the pacing feels right, and every system works the way it should. Nothing feels rushed, unfinished, or added just to fill space.

A 10/10 first-person shooter game should leave a strong impression right from the moment the action begins. Years after their release, these first-person shooters still hold up, still feel great to play, and still show what the genre can achieve at its absolute best.

Far Cry 3

The Open-World FPS That Perfected Player Choice And Exploration

  • An open-world shooter set on a dangerous tropical island controlled by pirates and mercenaries.
  • Blends stealth, exploration, crafting, and player freedom in how missions are completed.

Far Cry 3 is the best game in the series for many reasons, but especially for its exploration, story, and combat. The island is fully open for exploration. Players can clear enemy outposts, hunt wildlife, search for hidden relics, and gather plants used for crafting medicine and equipment upgrades. Taking over outposts weakens enemy control and opens fast travel points, which helps the world feel responsive to player actions.

Some players prefer silent takedowns and sniper attacks, while others choose direct gunfights with explosives and heavy weapons. The game rewards planning, but also supports chaotic action when things go wrong.

Trepang2

The Best-Feeling Shooter Of The 2020s

Shooting enemies in Trepang2 (2023)

  • Intense and visceral action
  • Creative main and submissions that incorporate horror elements

A love letter to F.E.A.R. and internet creepypastas like The Backrooms, Trepang2 might be the best first-person shooter of the 2020s so far, a statement not made lightly when the likes of Turbo Overkill, Echo Point Nova, and Far Far West exist. Despite going into some pretty complicated lore that touches upon all sorts of supernatural concepts, Trepang2‘s brilliance lies in its simplicity and focus: gunplay. Combat just feels great to control thanks to weapon feedback, quick movement, and two special abilities with long enough cooldowns to stop them from trivializing encounters.

While the main missions last forever and are generally fantastic, Trepang2 arguably shines brighter in its secondary/optional missions, which tend to be more overtly inspired by the SCP Foundation and creepypastas. Although not lacking in action, these operations lean heavily into atmosphere and suspense, becoming almost straight-up horror at times. When the gunfights actually begin, you are in for some of the best in the FPS genre’s history.

BioShock

Perfect Blend Of Atmosphere, Choice, And Shooter Mechanics

  • Story-rich journey through the haunting underwater city of Rapture.
  • Combines gunfire with Plasmid powers for creative combat strategies.

BioShock is a horror FPS that’s big on strong storytelling and atmosphere. The setting, Rapture, was built as a hidden underwater city based on extreme individual freedom. By the time players arrive, the city has fallen into chaos. The story is revealed through audio recordings, environmental clues, and encounters with survivors.

Combat combines traditional weapons with Plasmids, which grant players powers such as electricity, fire, and telekinesis. This allows creative approaches to fights, encouraging experimentation instead of simple run-and-gun tactics. The moral choice system involving the Little Sisters adds emotional weight. Also, decisions affect resources and influence the ending, giving players a reason to think about their actions.

DOOM

Pure, Fast, Relentless Action

  • Single-player campaign focused on high-speed combat against demons.
  • Demands quick movement, aggressive play, and Glory Kill finishers

DOOM was one of the best games of 2016, bringing the classic series back with a clear focus on speed and power. Instead of slowing players down with cover systems or heavy storytelling, the game pushes constant action. The Doom Slayer wakes up in a research facility on Mars that has been overrun after energy experiments opened a portal to Hell. From that moment, DOOM rarely pauses. The goal is simple: keep moving, keep fighting, and never lose momentum.

Combat is designed around a system called Glory Kills. When enemies are weakened, finishing them at close range drops health, ammo, and armor. It all stems from aggressive play, which encourages players to charge forward rather than hide. This design keeps battles intense and fast, especially when large groups of demons fill the arena.

Left 4 Dead 2

One Of The Best Cooperative FPS Games

Shooting an infected in Left 4 Dead 2 (2009)

  • Four-player survival built around coordination, awareness, and shared resources.
  • The dynamic AI system changes enemy waves, item placement, and pacing every time.

Left 4 Dead 2 is built around teamwork. Players choose one of four survivors and work together to escape infected cities, swamps, and abandoned towns. Staying close, sharing supplies, and reacting quickly to danger are the keys to survival. If a player goes alone, the game quickly punishes that mistake.

The experience in Left 4 Dead 2 feels different each time because of the AI Director. This system watches how the team performs and adjusts the challenge in real time. If players are struggling, it may ease the pressure. If they are doing well, it increases enemy numbers or sends powerful special infected to disrupt the group. This keeps tension high and gives the game strong replay value.
