Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) will hold onto his battleground House seat, The Associated Press projected, fending off a spirited push for a Democratic pickup.
Bacon defeated Democratic state Sen. Tony Vargas, providing a boost to Republicans’ hopes of keeping their slim House majority. The race was a rematch from 2022, when Bacon narrowly won by less than 3 percentage points.
Bacon’s victory comes after several polls showed him narrowly trailing Vargas. The district was also swamped with national outside spending from Democrats, who wanted to capture its one electoral vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Democrats were hoping that spending would help fuel Vargas to a victory — capturing a seat the party has long coveted — but Bacon was able to hold on by swaying enough Harris voters to his side.
