Extensive beauty

National parks feature some of the most treasured landscapes of the world. They are peaceful sanctuaries that transport people far away from the hustle and bustle of hectic life. These scenic areas preserve natural environments, provide homes for vast amounts of flora and fauna, and pay homage to America’s rich cultural heritage. National parks leave indelible marks on the hearts and minds of visitors from near and far. Find out how to go for free this month.

Park perks!

National parks showcase diverse ecosystems and provide an enriching experience for all ages. Typically, entrance fees apply to improve visitor experiences and recreation opportunities. At least 80% of the funding from recreation fees stays in the park where it was collected. The remaining 20% may be used to help other parks that do not collect fees, for example. However, to encourage visitors of all economies, and to entice interest in national parks, there are approximately 6 days in 2025 when national park entrance is free to the public. Per National Park Trips, the remaining days this year include:

Saturday, April 19, 2025: First day of National Park Week.

Thursday, June 19, 2025: Juneteenth National Independence Day

Monday, August 4, 2025: Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act

Saturday, September 27, 2025: National Public Lands Day

Tuesday, November 11, 2025: Veterans Day

The allure of national parks

One of the most compelling reasons to visit national parks is their unparalleled natural beauty. From towering mountains to vast deserts to lush forests and pristine lakes, national parks showcase a diverse array of landscapes. Each park has its unique charm and character, offering breathtaking views, unique plants and wildlife, outdoor activities, and photo opportunities that captivate visitors.

Here are some fun things to know:

  • Topping the list of most visited national parks are 5) Rocky Mountain National Park (4.15 million), 4) Yellowstone National Park (4.74 million), 3) Grand Canyon National Park (4.91 million), 2) Zion National Park (4.94 million), 1) Great Smoky Mountains National Park (12.19 million)
  • National parks are hot spots for adventurers. Hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching are popular recreational activities. Many parks offer ranger-led programs, guided tours, and educational workshops to enhance the outdoor experience.
  • In addition to natural wonders, many national parks preserve important cultural and historical sites. Ancient ruins, historic buildings, and sacred indigenous lands can be found within the boundaries of several parks. Exploring these sites offers a glimpse into the past and helps us understand the historical and cultural context of the region.
  • Visitors can also invest in annual or lifetime passes that are cost-effective options for nature lovers who wish to gain access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. America the Beautiful Pass provides a discounted way to visit numerous national parks and recreation areas.
  • On designated days, local visitors may be eligible for free entry. Check with a park near you to see if resident days are available. Some public libraries offer park passes that can be checked out like a book. They can be a fantastic resource for families and individuals on a budget. Corporate partnerships or promotions tied to specific companies or products may also provide free access to parks on occasion. Pay attention to the news for such opportunities. Seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities may also have access to special discounts.
  • Expect free days to be busy. Some national parks may limit the number of visitors on a given day, so plan accordingly. Do your homework to learn about national park hours and restrictions. It’s also advisable to be current on national park rules for personal safety and respect for the land.

Plan your visit

National parks are wonderous places offering a wealth of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural significance that make them ideal destinations for adventure, relaxation, observing nature and wildlife, and learning. This month, be sure to take an opportunity to visit a park near you. Whether you’re a seasoned park-goer or a first-time visitor, the experience will leave a lasting impression and inspire a deep appreciation for God’s planet.
