SACRAMENTO, California — State Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil filed a counter complaint against a former chief of staff who accused her in a September lawsuit of forcing him to perform sex acts and creating a hostile work environment.
Alvarado-Gil, a Central Valley Republican, accuses her former chief of staff, Chad Condit, of threatening her, saying he knows “how to make people disappear,” in court papers. She also alleges that Condit, who was later fired, stole $50,000 from her campaign.
Condit’s attorneys did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment on Thursday.
Alvarado-Gil’s allegations are the latest twist in a salacious legal saga that has captivated state Capitol insiders and could derail Alvarado-Gil’s 2026 reelection campaign. The senator made headlines this summer when she left the Democratic Party.
In his earlier complaint, Condit accused Alvarado-Gil of making overt sexual passes at him and eventually pressuring him into performing oral sex on her. Condit said he suffered serious injuries, including a collapsed hip and three herniated discs in his spine, after one such incident which occurred in the confines of a car.
“This growing control and exercise of power by ALVARADO-GIL further conditioned [Condit] into an unequal and subservient position,” his September suit reads.
In the Nov. 12 filing Alvarado-Gil’s attorney called the allegations outlandish and unsubstantiated. The counter complaint alleges Condit injured his back during a vacation to Disneyland and regularly abused alcohol and prescription medications.
The Condits are a well-known political dynasty in the Central Valley. Chad Condit’s father, Gary, faced scrutiny for the death of his intern, Chandra Levy, when he was in Congress. The elder Condit was never a suspect, and another person was later convicted of Levy’s death.
Alvarado-Gil’s cross-complaint portrays the younger Condit as a poorly-performing employee who was regularly intoxicated. She alleges that during a 2023 holiday party in her district, he was found in the “bathroom with his pants around his ankles, yelling for help.”
