As usual, there are new Boker models inbound. In the latest batch we’re getting the Friday, an elegant gent’s folder from a new collaborator, French product designer Alban Le Henry.
Le Henry is not, strictly speaking, a knife designer, but a product designer in general. His portfolio includes tables, chairs, a vase – even a pencil. He favors a minimalist aesthetic, enlivened by eccentric yet functional shapes. The Friday and the Hebdo, another new release from Boker, seem to be his very first knife designs – and he seems to have successfully carried his personal style into our industry.
The Friday’s blade shape is a playful take on the wharncliffe, very slim with a subtle upturn at the tip. The blade buries deep into the handle and, once its in the closed position, the rounded, in-line front flipper tab is visible – the only method of deployment on the Friday. The blade length is an extremely EDC-friendly 2.84 inches, a sweet spot length for a lot of the daily cutting chores we encounter in suburban life. And the Friday comes equipped with a fully fledged modern stainless, Nitro-V, so it should be able to work for long periods without a need for full-fledged resharpening.
Looking at the handle we see something equally pared back and elegant, an almost washboard-style profile rendered in a G-10 front scale, and a stainless steel off-side one. And although Le Henry did not have a lot of space to work with here he managed to incorporate a fully functioning frame lock onto the back scale, as well as a loop-over, deep carry wire pocket clip.
The Friday is available now.
